How long should a novel be?
Most adult debut novels land between 80,000 and 100,000 words. Fantasy and science fiction run longer, middle grade and category romance run shorter. The table below shows the typical range agents look for in each genre, and the counter below that checks your own manuscript against it.

Why agents care about the number
Word count is the first thing an agent learns about your book, usually in the second line of the query. It is a shortcut. A number far outside the genre range suggests either a book that has not been revised hard enough, or a writer who does not know the market yet. Neither is a judgment on your sentences, but both can stop a read before it starts.
Length also has a cost. A longer book costs more to print, which matters most for a debut with no sales record. That is why established authors get more room than first-time novelists in the same genre.
If your draft is too long
Very long drafts are rarely long because of wordy sentences. Line edits might save five percent. The real length is usually structural:
- The story starts too early. The first chapters set up a life the plot is about to interrupt. Most debut novels start before the story does.
- The middle repeats itself. Several chapters do the same job, like three conversations that each reveal the same thing. That is also why middles sag.
- Subplots that never connect. A thread that does not change the main plot, or the protagonist, can often go whole.
- Two books in one. If the draft is past 150,000 words, check whether there is a natural break where one story ends and another begins.
Cutting a whole scene that does not earn its place does more than trimming every scene by a few lines, and it is faster.
If your draft is too short
Short drafts are usually missing something rather than being too tight. Common gaps are a subplot that gives the protagonist a second pressure, scenes that show a relationship changing instead of summarizing it, or consequences that play out on the page. Adding filler to hit a number makes the book worse. Adding the scenes the story skipped makes it better.
Word count and pages
A standard manuscript page, double-spaced in 12-point type, holds about 250 words. That makes an 80,000-word novel about 320 manuscript pages and a 100,000-word novel about 400. Printed books fit more on a page, so the finished paperback is shorter. When an agent asks for the first 50 pages, they mean manuscript pages, roughly 12,500 words.
Length is not the real question
A draft can sit perfectly in range and still sag in the middle, start too late, or end without paying off what it set up. If your number is fine and the book still does not feel finished, the problem is probably structural. The free 16-point checklist is a good place to look first.

Is 100,000 words too long for a debut novel?
For fantasy, science fiction and historical fiction, no. For most other adult genres it sits at the top of the range, and a book at 100,000 words needs to earn every chapter. Past 120,000, most agents will read the number as a sign the draft needs cutting.
Is 60,000 words long enough for a novel?
For middle grade, young adult, cozy mystery and category romance, yes. For most adult genres, 60,000 reads as short, and agents may wonder whether the story is fully developed.
